The World Bank is working to support more than 20 countries in the East Asia and Pacific region by providing grants and low-interest loans for development projects, as well as expert advice and consulting services. In fiscal year 2005, the Bank provided the region with US$2.9 billion ($1 billion in interest-free IDA loans and grants, and $1.8 billion in low-interest loans from the IBRD). Worldwide, the Bank's annual lending commitments reached US$22.3 billion in 2005 for 279 projects worldwide. The World Bank finances and supports a project at the request of the government. An appraisal of the project's feasibility and loan terms is followed by negotiations, board review, and signing. The loan becomes effective after it has been ratified by the government.
