Dili, April 17, 2008
--The World Bank Group Timor-Leste is proud to inform of the successful video conference on using Arts and Music for HIV/AIDS Awareness that took place at the World Bank Office Dili, Timor-Leste, on the 17th of April 2008.

The objective of the conference was to raise awareness of organizations, civil society, and individuals on how the arts can positively influence awareness and discussions around HIV/AIDS.

The conference was a joint initiative between the World Bank’s Public Information Center (PIC Tokyo) and the Red Shoes Foundation. Leading academics, musicians, and Director for Global HIV/AIDS Program of the World Bank were just some of the guest speakers during the event. Participants included representatives from the Ministry of Health, civil society organizations, international and local health institutions, academics and the Catholic Church.

Through the use of Arts and Music, participants are expected to learn and share experience among their peer groups from other countries, raise HIV/AIDS awareness, and apply that knowledge at home and in the workplace.

Despite the fact that Timor-Leste has low levels of HIV/AIDS prevalence and that while many effective activities have been implemented, overall coordination is weak and important gaps persist. Therefore it is critical to raise greater awareness of the issue and to develop longer term strategies to prevent the spread of the disease.

The World Bank Timor-Leste continues to disseminate information about HIV/AIDS through various activities such as seminars, provision of condoms, and dissemination HIV/Aids brochures. This is in line with the World Bank’s commitment to fight HIV/AIDS both at home as well as in the work place.

Access to the World Bank HIV/AIDS knowledge databank can be done through the Public Information Center located at the Dili Office.
