Partners
Within the East Asia and Pacific region, we have strengthened our partnerships with international and regional organizations to promote DRR as an integral part of the development process. In May 2009, a joint Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) was signed between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) and the World Bank, marking the beginning of a five year partnership to strengthen disaster risk reduction and management in Southeast Asia. The program will focus on building capacity and mobilizing resources for DRR and climate change adaptation in ASEAN countries – Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei.
Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR). The Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) was launched in September 2006, and is designed to foster and strengthen global and regional cooperation among various stakeholders under the ISDR system such as low-as well as middle income country governments, international financial institutions, UN agencies, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and the private sector to leverage country systems and programs in ex ante disaster risk reduction. In particular, GFDRR assists countries prone to disaster risks to integrate risk reduction in their development strategies and to build a culture of disaster prevention. It uses the expertise, economies of scale and scope available from a multi-donor work program, and strengthens the impact of GFDRR resources for disaster reduction and recovery at the global, regional and country levels. The GFDRR receives financial support from the World Bank and supporting donors to achieve its development objectives at all levels. The GFDRR represents the best opportunity to provide the EAP region with funds to operationalize and mainstream disaster risk reduction activities into the Bank’s work.
International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR). The ISDR aims at building disaster resilient communities by promoting increased awareness of the importance of disaster reduction as an integral component of sustainable development, with the goal of reducing human, social, economic and environmental losses due to natural hazards and related technological and environmental disasters. In 2005, the ISDR established a regional unit hosted by UNESCAP in Bangkok, Thailand to support the Asia and Pacific Islands region. More...
Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC). ADPC is a regional non-profit organization that promotes safer communities and sustainable development through disaster reduction. ADPC focuses on training and education; provision of technical services; information, research and networking support; and regional program management.
ISDR Asian Partnership on Disaster Reduction (IAP). The Asian Partnership on Disaster Reduction (IAP) was set up in 2003 at the initiative of the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC) as an informal group to promote disaster risk reduction matters in the Asia & Pacific region. The IAP is composed of four UN bodies and two regional organizations: UNDP Regional Centre in Bangkok (UNDP-RCB), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific Region (UNESCAP), United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (UNOCHA/ROAP), Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC), Asian Disaster Reduction Centre (ADRC), and UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction Asia & Pacific.
Asian Disaster Response Center (ADRC). ADRC organizes workshops and provides training to officials responsible for disaster management, especially those involved in disaster prevention, preparedness, and mitigation for either the central or local government. In addition, the ADRC provides in-depth information of member countries’ disaster risk management structures and response capabilities during past disasters. ADRC has developed an online GIS system named VENTEN (Vehicle through Electronic Network of Disaster Geographic Information) for the region, which shows images before disasters, images after disasters, and detailed map images.
The ProVention Consortium is a global coalition of international organizations, governments, the private sector, civil society organizations and academic institutions that provides a forum for multi-stakeholder dialogue on disaster risk reduction and a framework for collective action. It aims to advance disaster risk management in developing countries by forging partnerships and linkages, advocating for increased policy attention and commitment to reducing natural hazard risks, and developing innovative approaches to the practical applications of disaster risk management. The ProVention Secretariat is hosted at the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Geneva.
United Nations Development Program (UNDP).The UNDP has been actively involved in multiple aspects of disaster risk management, including augmenting capacity at the country-level, developing loss assessment and risk estimation methodologies, collating disaster-related data, and coordinating various humanitarian and development partners working on disaster reduction, mitigation and recovery.|
South Pacific Applied Geosciences Commission (SOPAC) and the Pacific Disaster Center (PDC). The SOPAC and the PDC have developed new hazard assessment techniques and have been conducting capacity building efforts to enhance the capabilities of the emergency management programs in the region. However, despite the importance of the region-level led assessments, these cannot substitute for national strategies for risk assessments.Related Links
