Welcome Message

magdaWelcome to the World Bank's website on rural development, agriculture, and natural resources in the East Asia and Pacific (EAP) region. We are part of the East Asia Social, Rural, and Environment (EASER) unit, which is managed by Magda Lovei.

Rural development and agriculture are very important challenges for developing countries. 75% of the world’s poor (CAN WE INSERT EAP NUMBERS HERE) are rural and most are involved in farming. In the 21st century, agriculture remains a fundamental instrument for economic growth and poverty reduction, as the food crisis reminded us.

In collaboration with colleagues and experts inside and outside our institution, we work to reduce poverty through socially and environmentally sustainable rural development. To this end, we provide analytical and advisory services to our client countries on a wide range of topics. We assist regional governments to prepare and implement projects promoting rural development and increase rural incomes. The projects are funded by the World Bank Group and other external financiers and partners.

We especially hand in hand with governments and stakeholders to develop policies that emphasize the interests of the rural poor. On this site you will be able to learn more about us, including the latest news, our strategy, and the projects and studies we do in order to reduce rural poverty in our client countries, often in partnership with others.
If you have any questions or comments related to agriculture and rural development in the region, and about this website, please contact us at nqueen@worldbank.org
