Message from Andrew Steer on The Consultative Group on Indonesia (CGI)

by
Andrew Steer,
World Bank Country Director for Indonesia
Jakarta, January 28, 2007

"We welcome President Yudhoyono's announcement yesterday that Indonesia would no longer rely on the CGI framework. Indonesia has skillfully built a strong economy, and is no longer dependent on donor funding. The old CGI model --whereby the government presented a financing gap, and donors pledged funds to fill it -- is no longer relevant to a strong country like Indonesia. For this reason the CGI has been evolving rapidly over the past few years. For the past two years the CGI has been fully chaired and led by the Government, and has moved away from a focus on financing gaps and pledging. We believe it is now appropriate that Indonesia should graduate from the CGI process.

Of course it is  valuable to maintain a dialog with the international community on issues relating to access to technology, ideas, capital and trade, and we are pleased that the Government has stated its desire to continue such a dialog. We are also pleased that the Government plans to continue to benefit from the support from its development partners, consistent with the Government's development priorities."
