| Indonesia Expands Global Development Learning Network. | July 9, 2008 Communications Director for the East Asia and Pacific Region, Peter Stephens represented the World Bank at the launch of GDLN Indonesia - an ambitious effort to bridge the knowledge gap and bring Indonesia closer to the world through video-conferencing technology. GDLN Indonesia began as a modest network of four universities in 2002 with support from the World Bank. Through a strategic merger with the Indonesia Higher Education Network (INHERENT), the network now covers over 220 public and private universities and can also tap into distance learning opportunities from anywhere in Southeast Asia. Gas Flaring at Bekasi Landfill Marks Launch of Carbon Credit Purchase Deal. | July 2, 2008 Environment Sector Coordinator Josef Leitmann was on hand to witness the inauguration of a new methane gas flaring facility at the Sumur Batu landfill in Bekasi. This facility is at the heart of an emission reduction purchase agreement which the Bank (as a trustee to the Netherlands government) struck with clean-air engineers PT Gikoko. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is 21 times potentially more dangerous than CO2, and can be converted into CO2-equivalent carbon credits. Indonesia's Environment Minister Rachmat Witoelar attended the launch and applauded the Bekasi municipality for thinking globally and acting locally. Press Release |
