October 15, 2005 – The Tokyo High Level International Conference organized by the Global Environmental Action (GEA), a nongovernmental policy forum joined by policy makers, academics, and experts, was held in Tokyo on October 15-16, 2005, to discuss various measures and policy options for mitigating global climate change.
The conference was opened by H. I. H. the Crown Prince Naruhito and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, with more than 200 participants from government and experts. Among the speakers, Mr. Ian Johnson, World Bank Vice President for Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development (ESSD), delivered a speech outlining global challenges and calling for actions and strategic investments on climate change and water management, food security and risk management.
Global Environmental Action (GEA) was established in 1991 as a nongovernmental organization, founded by Former Prime Minister Noboru Takeshita, with the wide participation of Japanese parliamentarians, private sector, academics and international organizations. GEA frequently organize high level policy forums inviting prominent researchers and experts to discuss the issues of global environment and sustainable development. The World Bank participated in major conferences organized by GEA in Tokyo in the past few years.
