Communicating MDGs: First Dialogue Session by Japanese CSOs

October 21, 2005 -- Three major Civil Society Organizations in Japan:   JOICFP,  OISCA International and  Conservation International Japan met, in collaboration with the World Bank Tokyo Office, to launch a series of dialogue sessions to look into how to communicate the key messages of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) with the Japanese public and youth in particular. The first and pilot of three sessions was held connecting Tokyo, Kitakyushu, Sendai and Dahka-Bangladesh through the Global Development Learning Network.

Moderated by Mr. Koichi Omori, Communications Officer and CSO Liaison Officer at the World Bank Tokyo Office, presentations on different aspects of MDGs were made followed by Q & A. Students in Tokyo and Sendai took an active part to the dialogue. Among the speakers were Ms. Michiko Takahashi, OISCA International; Ms. Sumie Ishii, Executive Director of JOCFP; Professor Toshihiko Nakata, Faculty of Engineering of   Tohoku University in Sendai, Ms. Yukiko Oda,  Kitakyushu Forum of Asian Women in Kitakyushu; Mr. Masahiko Kiya, Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh. The speakers shared their views of MDGs from their own professional perspective.

At the end, Mr. Hisato Nakai and Mr. Shunsuke Tsuboi of   AIESEC Japan (Japan chapter of a global students' network interested in economics, business and commerce), presented the results of a survey showing how little MDGs are known among students in Japan. Their point hit the core of the main objectives of the program, which is to discuss how to inform people about the MDGs. This issue will be discussed further during the next sessions, which will be held in December 2005 and February 2006.

This event is part of World Bank Tokyo Office's civil society program, made possible with support of   Tokyo Development Learning Center (TDLC), as well as Tohoku University and  Kitakyushu International Techno-cooperative Association (KITA).
