World Bank Public Information Center(PIC Tokyo)Coffee Hour, Co-sponsored by Temple University Japan Campus (TUJ)
This work/study program in April-May 2008 was a part of “The Role of NGOs in International Development” course at TUJ generously sponsored by Phillip Morris Japan. The course was taught by Prof. Geeta Mehta, Prof Martine Van de Velde, and Prof. Mayuri Straub.
TUJ students focused on “Community Micro Credit Banking” and “Village a Knowledge Centers” set up by MS Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF), visiting self-help groups in eight villages. Such groups take small loans for micro credit banks to start businesses to increase their income from 1 dollar a day to 2, 3, or even 4 dollars a day. People use their hard work, ingenuity and entrepreneurship to climb out of poverty with minimal help from outside, and with dignity. The students observed the production of bio-fertilizers, bio-fungicides, paper made of banana plant waste and other innovative enterprises. MSSRF harnesses science, technology and modern management techniques for environmentally sustainable and socially equitable development. All projects undertaken are pro-environment, pro-poor and pro-women.
