Port Moresby, February 14, 2006 - Youth groups and community organisations from all around PNG have responded overwhelmingly to the Tingim Yut Kompetisen, the head of the World Bank in PNG said today. By the close of submissions on Friday, February 3, 2006 the World Bank office in Port Moresby had received 820 proposals. "We are very excited about the response to the competition from PNG’s youth organisations and community groups," Dr Benson Ateng, World Bank Country Manager for PNG said. "On a per capita basis, PNG’s response rate has broken records for this competition around the world." He said, in the past week, a team of 20 experienced assessors have been reviewing the proposals against the competition’s criteria of: innovation, sustainability, realism, cost-effectiveness and impact on the community. Their task is to come up with a short list of 25 finalists. The Tingim Yut Kompetisen is a nationwide competition aimed at finding and funding innovative projects for the benefit of PNG’s young people. It is an initiative of the World Bank in partnership with Air Niugini, Airlines PNG, Bank South Pacific, Coral Sea Hotels, Divine Word University, NASFUND, Pacific Enterprise Development Facility, Port Moresby Grammar School, UNDP and UNICEF. The finalist groups, who will be announced next week, will be asked to nominate one person to attend a workshop at Divine Word University in Madang to develop more detailed proposals and learn about project planning and implementation. Then, in early May, a representative from all finalist groups will be brought to Port Moresby where they will display their project ideas at a public forum. On 6 May, a panel of distinguished Papua New Guineans will decide and announce the winners. Winning groups will have their projects funded for 12 months. To be eligible for consideration, recognized youth or community groups had to find partnering organizations then submit an application that answered a set of questions about their project plans.
