Kristalina Georgieva a Bulgarian national, assumed her current assignment as Director for the World Bank Russia program on May 1, 2004.

Dr. Georgieva joined the World Bank in 1993. She has worked extensively on issues of economic competitiveness in transition economies, with an emphasis on natural resource management and environmental performance in Europe and Central Asia, Middle East and North Africa, and East Asia and the Pacific.  Her job assignments include Sector Director for Environment and Social Development for the East Asia and Pacific Region, and Director for Environment of the World Bank. During the East Asia crisis she oversaw the preparation of key social safety programs, and response to concerns in the region about risks to investment climate from deteriorating environmental performance. 

 

Prior to working at the World Bank Dr. Georgieva, a Bulgarian national, held a range of academic and consulting positions in Bulgaria, the United Kingdom, and the US and has lectured on development topics in a large number of universities around the world.

 

Dr. Georgieva holds a Ph.D. in Economic Sciences and an M.A. in Political Economy and Sociology, both from the Sofia University of National and World Economy.
