EducationSeminarBucharest, April 18, 2008 - A second Workshop on Higher Education Reforms – Approaches to Student Loans was jointly organized by the Ministry of Education, Research and Youth (MERY) and the World Bank Office in Romania as part of a broader technical assistance currently being provided by the World Bank to the MERY in the area of higher education financing.

The workshop was hosted by the MERY and the event was launched by Mr. Remus Pricopie, State Secretary for Higher Education.  The World Bank was represented by Mr. Benoît Blarel, Country Manager for Romania.  Participants in the workshop included other World Bank staff and international experts, representatives of various MERY departments, of academia, of students’ organizations and associations, of the Romanian American Foundation, as well as other stakeholders.

The workshop was a discussion forum on student loan objectives and need for Government involvement, on key aspects in the design of student loan programs and provided an opportunity to discuss priorities identified by participants.  The event was also a good occasion for the presentation of related initiatives promoting student loans in Romania.
