World Bank and United Nations joined forces to promote World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June. The event is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.
In a joint press briefing with Mr. Shigeo Katsu, Vice President of the World Bank for Europe and Central Asia, and Gulden Turkoz-Cosslett, the UN Resident Coordinator in Albania, reaffirmed the UN's commitment to "raising awareness of protecting the environment and making sure that politicians, parliamentarians, young people and citizens have knowledge about safeguarding the environment"
This was an excellent opportunity for the members of Albania Youth Voice Group to continue activities for raising awareness on environmental issues. A big banner with nice photos from the Bank financed projects on environment was placed in front of the Bank’s Office. Youth Voice Group members distributed to citizens and students CDs with recent Bank publications on Environment, green T-shirts, YVG bracelets, book-markers with says on environment, as well as small potted plants. One of the subgroups of Albania YVG is focused on protecting environment issues in the country.
Dressed in green T-shirts they had the chance to meet with the ECA Vice President Shigeo Katsu, who visited Albania, and informed him about their recent activities such as planting trees in schools, public debates on energy efficiency and environment protection. They donated him a green T-shirt and a logo bracelet.
"Youth Voice Group Albania" and UN volunteers jointly added value to what the Bank and UN is doing in the country, especially attracting the attention of young people to such an important and vital issue for all of us.
