| BAKU, 6 June, 2003 – The World Bank Country Office in Azerbaijan is pleased to announce winners of the 2003 Small Grants Program – Azerbaijan. (SGP) The objectives of the Program, which fist started to be implemented by the World Bank Country Office in Azerbaijan in 2000, are to promote dialogue with, share development knowledge and resources among the World Bank partners and clients, and to build NGOs’ capacity for their effective involvement in reforms and development of the civil society in Azerbaijan. This year SGP focused on civic engagement for the empowerment of marginalized and vulnerable groups. The purpose of the Small Grants program is to support the empowerment of citizens to have greater ownership of development processes, thereby making these processes more inclusive and equitable. Six organizations have been selected by the Joint Small Grants Program Committee comprising the staff of the World Bank Azerbaijan Office and OSI SROS through thoroughly review of 62 proposals submitted to the Country Office by national NGOs The selection process finished on 30 May, 2003. OSI SOROS is considering possible co financing of five out of six successful projects. The winners of 2003 SGP: 1. ECOS. The project “Strengthening of public activity of orphan children in environmental conservation of Azerbaijan” comprises different types of educational activities on environmental issues for orphan children, including training programs, competitions, travel tours to natural reserves, International Ramsar sites, conferences and seminars and Children art contest under motto “ Environment of Azerbaijan with children eyes” 2. Political Technologies Centre. Project “Let us know our community, Let our community know us “aims at developing and institutionalizing where relevant cooperation and relationships between municipalities and the civil society (local community, international humanitarian organizations, local authorities, mass-media) and setting up a mechanism information dissemination to the public. 3. « Buta »Children Humanitarian Fund. Project “Support for youth development in refugee community in Sumgayit” comprise work with youth in 15 IDPs communities in Sumgayit by involving them in public activities through organization of youth interest club with different kind of activities, including, seminars and debates on youth related issues, training courses, publication of youth newspaper, meetings with representatives of Ministry of Youth Tourism and Sport and mass media, etc. 4. “Multimedia” Information Systems and Technologies Center. Project “Organizing information flow for and within communities”. Support to information flow between municipalities and communities by creating a database on municipalities, organizing trainings on information flow management for municipalities and a conference on –municipality- community relationship with the presentation of the created database and web –recourse. 5. “Bilik” Ganja Regional organization Ecological Society. Under the project titled “Community awareness and debate on forestry preservation.” Round tables and teledebates on preservation of forestry will be held for and with participation of IDPs and local community of the Goy Gol area. 6. Azerbaijan Diabetic League. Project “ How to live with diabetes – social rehabilitation”. NGO will organize seminar, meetings, teledebates with community representatives on the issues related to integration of people with diabetes into society. The World Bank Small Grants Program was established in 1983 to provide a way for the Bank to promote dialogue and dissemination of information about international development in forums outside its own operations. During the fiscal year 2003 US $ 30,000 was allocated for the Small Grants Program - Azerbaijan. The total amount for the four years of Small Grants Program –Azerbaijan makes US $125,000. |
