Focus on Civil Society

The growth of civil society has been one of the most significant trends in international development. Partnerships between governments, businesses and civil society organizations (CSOs) are now one of the most effective ways to raise standards of living and achieve sustainable development. The World Bank recognizes the important role that CSOs play in meeting the challenges of development and welcomes the opportunity to work with civil society.

Special programs
Small Grants Program in Belarus
The Small Grants Program (SmGP) of the World Bank aims to make development more inclusive and equitable by empowering citizens to have greater ownership of development processes. The program provides grants to civil society organizations to promote dialogue and disseminate information about development.
Development Marketplace (Global program)
The Development Marketplace (DM) is another mechanism by which the World Bank provides funds to CSOs. DM is a competitive grant program of the World Bank that funds innovative, small-scale development projects. DM’s primary objective is to identify and support creative cutting-edge solutions to the most pressing social and economic concerns of our time; ideas that deliver results and have the potential to be expanded or replicated. In this way, the World Bank gains insight from grassroots practitioners who have important contributions to make in the fight against poverty, and can share their experience with the broader development community.

The theme of 2007 Global Development Marketplace was “Improving Results in Health, Nutrition, and Population for the Poor”.
