The World Bank Group is organizing a debate on October 7, 2010 among world-class experts and policymakers on “How to Manage Capital Flows in a Globalized World?” You are kindly invited to take part in this exciting event.
The Development Debate is on how developing countries can better manage capital flows in order to maximize the benefits of such flows while mitigating potential adverse effects. In the wake of the current economic and financial crisis, countries around the globe are looking for ways to reignite economic growth. The debate will seek to get insights into questions such as: How can recipient governments of developing countries best deal with the ‘boom and bust’ cycle of capital flows and various risks posed by the volatile capital flows? What policy measures can they use to optimally make use of the opportunities provide by international financial integration? How to mitigate the risks?
The debate will take place in Washington, D.C. on October 7, 2010, from 9:00 – 11:30 am (EST) linking through video conference Brazil, Mexico, Poland, South Africa, and Turkey. It will also be webcast live on our platform, www.developmentdebates.org. World-class experts will provide their analyses and opinions from different perspectives. The debate will be moderated by Ms. Zanny Minton-Beddoes, Economics Editor at The Economist magazine. The debaters include:
1. Anne Krueger, former Deputy MD at the IMF and former Vice President and Chief Economist at the World Bank;
2. Yaga Venugopal Reddy, former Governor, Reserve Bank of India and IMF Executive Director
3. Guillermo Calvo of Columbia University
4. Hyun Song Shin, Senior Advisor for International Economy to the President of South Korea
