World Bank Global HIV/AIDS Program and UNODC Reception at the CFRR

On 20 July 2010 the Centre for Financial Reporting Reform (CFRR) hosted a reception organized by the World Bank Global HIV/AIDS Program (HDNGA) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), offering experts from different HIV and AIDS organizations the opportunity to learn from each other’s experience in combating AIDS in different regions of the world.

Anthony Thompson, Sector Manager of the World Bank Global HIV/AIDS Program opened the reception with a summary of the Program’s recent activities and achievements and then gave a brief outline of the Program’s priorities for the coming year. He expressed his satisfaction that the XVIII International AIDS Conference was taking place from 18 - 23 July 2010 in Vienna. He then took the opportunity to introduce David Wilson, the new director of World Bank Global HIV/AIDS Program (HDNGA), and Eva Jarawan, Sector Manager of Africa Region Technical Health (AFTHE).

In his address Michal Rutkowski, Director of Human Development South Asia Region (HD SAR), emphasized that those carrying HIV suffer a double burden: not only do they suffer from the immune deficiency virus, but they are also often subject to social stigmatization.

Christian Kroll, the UNODC’s Global Coordinator for HIV/AIDS, summarized recent scientific developments in the struggle against HIV/AIDS, outlined some of the lessons that had been learnt and briefly described the next steps in combating HIV/AIDS.

The organizers were particularly honored to welcome US Ambassador Eric Goosby, the United States Global AIDS Coordinator, who leads all U.S. Government international HIV/AIDS efforts. In this role, Ambassador Goosby oversees implementation of the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), as well as U.S. Government engagement with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. H.E. Paata Gaprindashvili, Ambassador of Georgia to the Republic of Austria and Adam Fronczak, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Poland were among the other distinguished foreign guests attending the event .

Representatives of the host country, Austria, included Seena Moongananiyil from the Federal Ministry of Finance and Petra Bayr, Member of Parliament, Spokesperson of the Parliamentary Sub-Committee and Co-Chair of the Leadership and Accountability Program Committee (LAPC) of the XVIII International AIDS Conference.

Although it is not directly involved in the World Bank Global HIV/AIDS program, the CFRR is proud to have been able to act as a meeting point for participants in the global fight against HIV/AIDS.
