Kari Nyman, Lead Specialist, joined the Bank in 1991. Since 2002, he is working in the Europe and Central Asia (ECA) Region, in the Infrastructure and Energy Sector Department. From 1983 through 2001, Kari worked on energy policy, planning, project development, implementation and finance throughout the Asia region. In 1997-2001, he was the leader of the Bank's India energy team and member of the India country team. From 1983 until joining the World Bank in 1991, he worked with the Asian Development Bank as an economist and engineer. Kari's working experience in the 1976-1983 period included an international telecommunications/automation equipment/systems manufacturer, an energy-sector consulting firm, a power generator, and a municipal energy utility.
Current work program: Energy and infrastructure strategy and privatization issues, team leadership of the Second Programmatic Adjustment lending operation in Romania and the Bank's regional lending facility (ECSEE APL) for the Energy Community of South East Europe, and other energy projects. Peer review and other cross-support assignments.
Strengths: Kari's strengths are in client orientation/service; managing large and decentralized multisectoral teams of staff and consultants; and energy policy and strategy, reform and restructuring, as an integral part of broader assistance programs supporting clients in economic and fiscal restructuring.
Education: Microeconomics and civil law (Tampere University) and electrical engineering and industrial economics (Tampere Institute of Technology), Tampere, Finland.
Languages (other than English): Finnish (native), Swedish and German (rusty).
