Jonathan S. Kamkwalala, Lead Financial Analyst, joined the Bank in 1987 through the Young Professionals Program. Since graduating from the program, he has worked on water supply and urban development projects and sector work in the South Asia region, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. He has worked as task manager on urban water supply projects for Dhaka in Bangladesh and Kathmandu in Nepal, as well as portfolio management and supervision of a range of water supply programs in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. He has also been task manager of Urban Development activities in Bangladesh and Bhutan, focusing on institutional capacity building for urban local bodies in Bangladesh. He also has led teams of multi-sector specialists in strategy formulation in the urban sector, including sector work on municipal finance issues in Bangladesh. Mr. Kamkwalala was Team Leader for the Urban and Water cluster in the South Asia region, and his experience in the region includes Acting Sector Director for the S. Asia Infrastructure Unit from January to August 2000.
Since April 2002 when he moved to the ECA region, Mr. Kamkwalala is the Program Team Leader for water supply and urban activities in Central Asia and Task Team Leader for the Bukhara and Samarkand Water Supply Project in Uzbekistan, and the Dushanbe Water Supply Project in Tajikistan, the Small Towns Infrastructure and Capacity Building Project in the Kyrgyz Republic and Municipal Infasttructure Development Project in Tajikistan, among other tasks.
Prior to joining the Bank, Mr. Kamkwalala worked as Assistant Project Manager for the Investment and Development Bank of Malawi (INDEBANK), a leading development finance institution in the country.
Strengths: Financial Analyst experience in water supply, including municipal finance, project development and design; strategy formulation; managing multisector team, and client focus.
Education: B. Sc. in Economics (University of Malawi); M.S. in Finance (Arthur D. Little School of Management, Cambridge, Massachusetts).
