Since the 1980s, the World Bank has been integrating gender issues into its country work and lending operations. Between 1995 and 2000, the Bank was the single largest lender in the world for health, population and nutrition projects, three quarters of which contained gender responsive actions. |
Each of the Bank’s six regional departments now has gender coordinators who assist regional operational staff to mainstream gender issues into their analytical work and lending operations. In addition, over 20 country gender focal points have been appointed in World Bank country offices in ECA.
The Bank now conducts conduct a periodic country gender assessment of the gender-based barriers to economic growth and poverty reduction. It uses the assessment’s findings in its country dialogue to prioritize gender responsive interventions. It then integrates gender analysis and gender-responsive interventions into its country programs. These have to be agreed to by the client country.
