
| The World Bank Annual Meetings, ISTANBUL -- Some 90 million people in developing countries risk being forced into extreme poverty as a result of the global economic crisis, the World Bank's governance committee said Monday, October 5, 2009. | Poverty reduction is the overarching objective of all the World Bank’s activities in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region.  The Poverty Team focuses primarily on supporting countries in: (1) measuring, monitoring and analyzing poverty in the region; (2) developing and evaluating overarching strategies for poverty reduction; and (3) analysing the poverty and social impact of chosen interventions. General Overview. Poor people in Eastern Europe and Central Asia have much in common with the poor in other parts of the world, namely an inability to meet basic material needs. However, the region’s historical legacy, the experience of transition and specific geographic factors create unique challenges. For example, climate conditions mean warm clothing and heating are essential for survival, rapid aging of populations means there are fewer children to support the poor, while reductions in family size means that households are exposed to shocks that would otherwise be managed by large intra-family and community networks... more>>  Regional Challenges.  Public policies to address poverty reduction in Eastern Europe and Central Asia need to focus on three areas common to all of the countries: (1) fostering job creation and raising productivity; (2) improving public service delivery; and (3) addressing spatial inequalities …more>>  The World Bank’s Strategy.  To design programs and policies that contribute to reducing poverty, it is necessary to have reliable data on its nature, depth, and distribution. The World Bank’s Poverty Team in the Europe and Central Asia Region focuses primarily on supporting countries in: (1) measuring, monitoring and analyzing poverty in the region; (2) developing and evaluating overarching strategies for poverty reduction; and (3) evaluating the poverty and social impact of chosen interventions... more>> _________________________________________________________________
