The World Bank as a trustee of a number of Carbon Funds intends to purchase Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emission Reductions (ER) caused by increased generation of small scale run-of-the-river hydropower stations (HPPs). The generation increase is expected due to the rehabilitation of the existing and construction of new hydro power stations.
The Small Hydro Rehabilitation Project is a carbon finance project, that aims to purchase ER credits from the rehabilitated hydropower stations in Georgia. The ERs will be purchased by the Community Development Carbon Fund (CDCF) of the World Bank and part of the carbon revenues will be used to the benefit of communities neighboring the HPPs. The rehabilitation works will be financed by USAID, EBRD, Bank of Georgia, UNDP, and by the owners' equity contributions. USAID will assist in the development of the project, providing technical and financial support under its Rural Energy Program.Â
To comply with the Bank's Environmental and Social Safeguard Policies, the Bank has disclosed a Programmatic Environmental Assessment for the Small Hydro Rehabilitation Project.Â
