September, 18.Today, the World Bank Lead Economist Willem van Eeghen presented the ECA flagship report Migration and Remittances – Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union for an external audience in the World Bank Country Office in Moldova. This report looks at migration flows to, from and within this region and the remittances that follows. For Moldova, the large outflows of migrants and inflows of remittances have had great impacts on the labor market, real wages, household earnings and consumption, but also on the exchange rate and other macro economic variables. A conclusion of the report is that migration can benefit both sending and receiving countries and reduce poverty among migrants if it is better coordinated between countries.
The presentation of the report was followed by an open discussion. Participants: Willem van Eeghen - Lead Economist at WB Melanie Marlett - Country Manager for WB in Moldova Martin Wyss - IOM
