The initiative, in accordance with the principles established by the Stability Pact and with the EU enlargement prerequisites, aims to launch in South-East Europe an up-to-date process of spatial development planning in line with the EU ESDP (European Spatial Development Policy).
The eastern Adriatic region, following the recent developments in the process of stabilization, reveals more and more its strategic importance and thanks to its proximity with the European Union, gains further relevance as an area of great potential.
Outcomes of the socialist economy, the effects of the war and the ineffectiveness of the recent governmental policies have resulted in the decline of Northern Dalmatia as one of the depressed Croatian areas. In addition to one of the highest unemployment rates, the lack of a developed transport and communication network has increased the marginalisation of the area.
The recent international agreements and commitment to peace and regional stability further stressed the need for a well thought-out regional development as a precondition for European integration processes as well as return of refugees and protection of the minorities. Return process has in fact to be understood not only as an ethnic but also as a social and economic issue. Details of the workshop can be found in the attached file.
