L’Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio

L’Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio is one of Italy’s major cultural sensations of the moment. The band, named after a square in Rome’s Esquilino neighborhood, is composed of sixteen musicians from nine different nationalities. It was created five years ago by director Mario Tronco with the aim of bringing together local musicians from the city’s immigrant communities. The result is a fusion of Latin American, North African, East Asian and Italian sounds as well as other musical genres. The band has toured in Italy and abroad and it was recently the subject of a documentary film, ‘L’Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio’ (2006), a box office success nominated for two Italian DVD Awards (Best Documentary and Best Musical Documentary) and presented this year at Robert De Niro’s Tribeca Film Festival in New York.
The Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio performed a special concert for the ECA Youth Conference participants on Wednesday, May 23, at the “Centrale Ristotheatre”. Located in an old theatre in the heart of Rome, the venue houses both a restaurant and a stage for shows and concerts. Guests can taste the excellent in-house cuisine while enjoying the magical atmosphere of the location and the music itself.
