Visions of Rome

On May 25, a series of cultural activities were organized and sponsored by the City of Rome for the participants of the Conference.

Visions of Rome In the morning, one group took a tour of Rome's famous Capitoline Museums (in English), while a second group enjoyed an open-top bus tour of the city's historic sites.

Lunch and dinner

Canova Bar, Piazza del Popolo

Redesigned by architect Valadier in 1834, Piazza del Popolo has recently been transformed into an elegant pedestrian zone. It is a place for political events, end of season concerts, as well as the Renaissance gate of the city: here start the classic walks down Via del Corso, Via del Babuino and Via Ripetta, a ‘trident’ delineated by the sister churches of S. Maria dei Miracoli and of Montesanto, started by Carlo Rainaldi and completed by Bernini with the collaboration of Carlo Fontana.

The Said Chocolate Factory

SAID Chocolate Factory was founded in 1923 by Aldo De Mauro. After being heavily damaged by bombing in 1943, the sale of chocolate and candy resumed in 1956 thanks to his son Bruno. Bruno de Mauro, his wife Marcella and their children Fabrizio and Carla are the instigators of the rebirth of the chocolate factory which we can see today. The factory is a jewel in the heart of the San Lorenzo quarter. In a unique atmosphere with suffused lights, a large rectangular table in the centre is covered in chocolate blocks of all types, the walls are lined with shelves with books, wooden drawers and large transparent jars containing candy of all colors, and old machines are displayed by the fresh praline counter.
