ECSSD sponsored an Environment Sector workshop on "Implementing the Environmental Acquis of the European Union" in Leuven, Belgium (December 3-7, 2007).  The objective of the workshop was to offer ECSSD (HQ/FO) staff the opportunity to have first hand interaction with experts from the European Commission to discuss topics such as, State of the Environment in Central & Eastern Europe; environmental policies; thematic strategies in water, wastewater, waste management, and urban environment; new challenges in the urban agenda (air pollution, pollution prevention and control, and climate change mitigation and adaptations); managing natural and rural areas (e.g., implementation of the Natura 2000 network and the mainstreaming environment into rural development and infrastructure); learning about EC investment instruments and planning approaches, role of stakeholder organizations and the press; and most importantly recognizing opportunities to develop a strong relationship between the Bank and the European Community.
