Improving the Lives of People in ECA (ILPE) is the Europe and Central Asia (ECA) Region’s annual results event. Launched in 2008, it shares best practices, encourages debate and recognizes competitively selected teams. The first ILPE, which took place in April 2008, showcased 19 strong examples of achieving results on the ground through investment operations, DPLs, and knowledge activities. The three-day event consisted of a series of panel discussions and workshops organized around the Bank’s six strategic themes. The second ILPE took place in February 2009. It showcased 13 ECA activities, also selected through a contest, that have produced strong results contributing to the Bank's strategic goals. An additional criteria for selecting the winners in for ILPE 2009 was that the activities were innovative. In line with the first ILPE, we held a two-day learning event to share best practices and debate some of the more challenging aspects of defining, realizing and measuring results.

"Improving the Lives of People in Europe and Central Asia (ECA) is at the heart of the World Bank’s support to client countries. We have the great privilege and responsibility of helping governments — from Albania to Uzbekistan — to overcome poverty and promote growth. As we support our clients to deliver results, it is critical that these are measured and monitored. Only by knowing what has been achieved through our interventions can our clients make better decisions and steer development efforts to improving the lives of their peoples."
