Since the Kyrgyz Republic joined the institution in September 1992, the World Bank’s overall mission in Kyrgyzstan has been to promote economic growth, reduce poverty, and encourage a better quality of life. The financial assistance committed to the Kyrgyz Republic so far amounts to US$ 1 billion for 48 IDA-funded projects, in the form of grants and highly concessional credits. To date, 28 operations for US$ 671.5 million have been completed and closed, and 20 projects for US$ 388.63 million are ongoing. These projects have a particular focus on the rural population, including rural infrastructure, health and education. As an immediate response to the crisis which the country faced last year, the World Bank has delivered 7 operations totaling to $166 million, since July 2010, including two emergency operations. In August 2011, the Bank's Board of Directors discussed the Interim Strategy Note for the Kyrgyz Republic for the next two years. The Bank's assistance now will shift from emergency response to stabilization and social service modernization efforts. The focus of assistance is on improving governance, economic recovery, and social stabilization through social services, community infrastructure, and employment.
