Geographic Position
The Chuvash Republic is situated in the eastern part of the East-European Plain, mainly on the right bank of the River Volga, between its tributaries Sura and Sviyaga.
History
1920 – Chuvash Autonomous Oblast is established 1925 – transformed into Chuvash ASSR 1990 – Chuvash Republic within the Russian Federation
Population
The Republic of Chuvashia has a large share of rural population, negative natural population growth figures and a weak migration inflow of population. The total population number is declining. Chuvash people, descendants of Turkic-speaking Volga and Kama Bulgarians, represent over 2/3 of the population. Chuvash believers are Orthodox Christians. Before forced Christianization (XVIII century) tribal cults were widespread. Almost three thirds of the urban population (71.8 %) live in the cities of Cheboksary and Novocheboksarsk.
State Structure
Chuvashia is a presidential republic within the Russian Federation. President is elected every five years and heads the executive power branch of the Republic. The highest legislative authority is a single-chamber State Council. The highest executive body is the Cabinet of Ministers headed by a Chairman elected by the Supreme Council.
Climate
The climate is moderate continental with moderately cold winters and warm summers. Winter temperatures range from -17 to -7 Centigrade, while summer temperatures range between +15 and +23 Centigrade. The vegetative period lasts for 180 days.
Economy
Chuvashia supplies products of machine-building and chemical industries as well as fabrics, clothes and hops to other regions of Russia. The main branches of agriculture are dairy stock farming and production of potatoes and vegetables. The energy sector is represented by a group of thermal power stations and the Cheboksary Hydropower Station. Chuvashia is an all-Russia monopolist in the production of cationite dye-stuffs and dichloromethane.
Resources
Chuvashia has fertile soils and oil reserves; it also has a well-developed processing industry and advanced infrastructure. 32% of the territory is covered by forests. The main forest ranges are situated along the river Sura and along the opposite bank of the river Volga.
Specific Features of the Region
Machine-building products are mainly designed to meet needs of electric power industry. These products include electric meters and cables. The Chuvash Republic has chemical industry enterprises specializing in the production of toxic chemicals, dye-stuffs, varnishes and paints, polymeric products and household chemicals. |

Fyodorov, Nikolai Vassilyevich President of the Republic of Chuvashia
Born on May 9, 1958 in Chedino village, Mariinsko-Posadsky Raion, Chuvashia.
Doctor of Economics, Doctor of Law, Professor.
1980 – graduated from the School of Law, Kazan State University
1985 – graduated from the post-graduate course, Institute of State and Law of the USSR Academy of Science
1980-1989 – Professor, Chuvash State University
1989 – People’s Deputy of the USSR
1990-1993 – Minister of Justice of Russia. He was appointed to this post within four different Governments of Russia.
1993 – Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation (first convocation)
1994 – President of the Chuvash Republic
1997 – Reelected as President of the Chuvash Republic for a second term
2001 - Reelected as President of the Chuvash Republic for a third term
2005 - Reelected as President of the Chuvash Republic for a fourth term

Born on April 29, 1970.
Graduated from the Department of Specialized Machine-Building of the Moscow State Technical University named after N.E. Bauman (development engineer for gas impulse dynamic devices); Moscow State Institute of International Relations (University) of the MFA of the Russian Federation (Department of Law, Lawyer); in 2000 he graduated from the Russian National Academy of International Trade (Department of State Foreign Economic Relations Service, Economist). Fluent in English and German.
