Geographic Position
Volgograd Oblast is situated in the South-Eastern part of the East-European Plain. The Oblast has a favorable geographic position, being the main gateway to the South of Russia and eventually to Iran, Iraq via the Caucasus and India via the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Population
Russians constitute the larger portion of the population. Other ethnicities populating the Oblast include Ukrainians, Kazakhs, Germans and Tatars. Before 1942 a part of Volgograd Oblast’s territory belonged to the Republic of the Volga Germans. The natural population growth is negative. Over the last few years the intensity of the migration inflow has been declining, and the total population (including the capital city) has begun to decrease.
Climate
The climate is continental: winters with little snow are cold while summers are hot and dry. The average air temperature of January ranges from -8С to -12С, while that of July is within the range of +22С to +24С. The annual average precipitation level in the North-West amounts up to 500 mm, while that in the South-East is below 300 mm. The vegetative season lasts for 150-175 days.
Economy
Volgograd Oblast is an industrially advanced region with especially well-developed machine-building and metalworking industries. The structure of the domestic economy is quite well-balanced. Diversified agriculture is complemented by varying industries and oil and gas reserves. Two largest navigable rivers connected by the Volga-Don Channel cross the Oblast’s territory. The Volzhskaya Hydropower Station is located on its territory.
Volgograd Oblast is Russia’s prominent producer of grains, vegetable oil, vine crops, as well as tractors, steel pipes, cement and asbestos slate.
Resources
Volgograd Oblast ahs a high potential of advancing its mineral resource and raw-materials sector based on its various reserves of mineral resources: hydrocarbons (oil, condensate and gas), chemical stuffs (Potassium, Magnesium and Sodium salts and phosphorites), raw materials for metallurgy (molding sands), construction industry (carbonate rock and sandstones for the production of gravel and quarry stone; various sands and clays), iron ore, non-ferrous and rare metal ores (titano-zirconia placer deposits). Volgograd Oblast has 209 discovered deposits and 110 showings of solid mineral resources. 47 (i.e. 22.5% of the total number) out of the above are being exploited. 74 % of the hydrocarbon reserves is concentrated in new fields, however, thanks to intensified production process the old oil province ensures the production of 80% of the Oblast’s oil by using the most cost-efficient natural flow method.
Specific Features of the Region
The Oblast is an old oil-producing region with a relatively high degree of the development of oil reserves. 93 oil and gas fields were discovered in the Oblast. 9 of them are worked-out, 20 are suspended, 1 is being explored and 63 are being exploited. The capital of Volgograd Oblast was severely devastated during the Great Patriotic War. Over 90% of residential buildings was burned down or destroyed. |

Maksyuta, Nikolai Kirillovich Governor of Volgograd Oblast
Born on May 26, 1947 in Zakharovka, Kirovograd Oblast, Ukraine.
1965 – graduated from Nikolayev Shipbuilding Institute (mechanical engineer).
1971-1995 – assistant foreman, Deputy Manager, Manager of a shop, Director of Production, Managing Director of the Plant
1995 – Chairman of the Volgograd City Duma (позднее - Совет народных депутатов).
1996 – Governor of the Volgograd Oblast. Member of the Council of the Federation of the Russian Federation (second convocation). Member of the Committee for Budget, Tax Policy, Finance, Customs and Foreign Exchange Regulation and Banking.
2000 – re-elected Governor of the Volgograd Oblast
2001 – Honorable Professor of Volgograd State Agricultural Academy
2004 – elected Head of the Volgograd Oblast Administration for a third term of office
