| | TVER OBLAST
Geographic Situation
Tver Oblast is situated in the North-Western part of Russia. It borders on Smolensk Oblast in the South, Pskov Oblast in the South-West, Novgorod Oblast in the West and the North-West, Vologda Oblast in the North, Yaroslavl Oblast in the North-East and the East, and Moscow Oblast in the East and the South-East.
History
1935-1990 – Kalinin Oblast 1991 – renamed into Tver Oblast
Population
Tver Oblast has a scattered network of small towns. The overwhelming population is Russian. There is an area of compact residence of Karelians (since the 19th century). The number of the population has recently been declining. Life expectancy among men is low.
Climate
The climate is moderately continental. The average temperature in January is -9° C to - 17° C, and in July +17-18° C. The annual precipitation is 550-750 mm. The Western part of the oblast is distinguished by a somewhat warmer winter and higher moisture content. The vegetation period is 120-133 days.
Economics
Tver Oblast has an advantageous transportation and geographical position between the two largest Russian cities. It harbors great potentialities for the development of agriculture but this is impeded by the small number of the rural population. Minerals, with the exception of peat, pot clay and quartz sand, are lacking. The most attractive industries are power engineering, vehicles construction and petroleum refining. The oblast has an obvious agricultural orientation. As regards industry, Tver Oblast is distinguished by the production of glass, faience, passenger cars and petroleum products. The leading sector in agriculture is livestock breeding, orientated predominantly towards milk and meat production.
Resources
Tver Oblast has substantial mineral resources such as sand and gravel, various kinds of limestone, peat, sapropel, fresh groundwater and brown coal. Many of them (such as pot and kaolin clay, high-purity quartz sand, marble limestone and others) have unique consumer properties. Peat reserves are most significant amounting to 2,051 million tons. The oblast rates one of the first in the Russian Federation in the volume of its output. 43 peat deposits with a total area of about 300,000 hectares are being developed on a commercial scale. More than half of the oblast’s territory is under forests, mostly mixed ones.
Peculiarities of the Region
In the territory of Tver Oblast there are the Kalinin and the Vishniy Volochyok thermal power stations, the Konakovo GRES, and the Kalinin nuclear power plant. Tver Oblast accounts for ¾ of Russia’s output of passenger cars and ½ of the output of excavators. Freight cars, river vessels, machine-tools and tower cranes are also produced there. There are 9 artificial water reservoirs in the oblast, the largest of them being the Ivankovo, Rybinsk and Uglich reservoirs. The Valdai Upland in the Western part of the oblast is the upper watershed serving as a freshwater source for the European part of Russia, Byelorussia, Ukraine and the Baltic countries. |
