| | BRYANSK OBLAST
Geographic Position
The Bryansk Oblast is situated in the central part of the East-European Plain, in the interstream area of two large river systems – those of Dnepr and Volga. It has common borders with two republics and four oblasts of the Russian Federation: the Republic of Belarus in the West (Gomel and Mogilev Oblasts), Kaluga and Smolensk Oblasts in the North, Orel and Kursk Oblasts in the East and South-East, and Ukraine in the South (Chernigov and Sumy Oblasts).
History
1944 – Bryansk Oblast was established as a separate region under a Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Prior to that it was part of Orel Oblast.
Population
Bryansk Oblast is a region almost exclusively populated by Russians. 1/3 of the population leave in rural areas. Negative natural population growth and declining migration flow are characteristic of the region. The average life expectancy is higher than that in the neighboring regions.
Climate
The climate is moderate continental. Winters are relatively mild and snowy while summers are warm. The average temperature of January is -7-9 Centigrade, while that of July is - +18-+19 Centigrade. The annual precipitation level is within 560-600 mm.
Economy
Bryansk is one of the central Russian regions with highly developed industrial capacities. The leading position in the productive structure belongs to enterprises of machine-building and metalworking, electronics, lumbering and woodworking, pulp-and-paper, textile and construction materials industries. It should be noted that the economic and geographic position of Bryansk Oblast significantly deteriorated in the early 1990’s after the weakening of economic ties with Ukraine and Belorussia. In addition, the region, out of all regions of Russia, was the most radioactively contaminated area after the Chernobyl disaster. A significant portion of agricultural lands was withdrawn from the farming cycle while the population was moved to safer locations. Part of the territory of the Oblast turned into an economic desert for decades to come..
Resources
The Oblast has significant reserves of peat, raw materials (such as sand, clay, rotten-stone, chalk) for construction materials and glass-making industries, as well as phosphate-containing ores for the production of mineral fertilizers. A considerable portion of the Oblast’s territory (about one fourth) is covered by forests.
Specific Features of the Region
As a result of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station Disaster on April 26, 1986, a part of the Bryansk Oblast’s territory was contaminated with long-lived radionuclides. The Oblast has Bryansk Machine-Building Plant established in 1873 which produces railroad locomotives and marine diesel engines. |
