Geographic Position
The Voronezh Oblast is situated in the southern part of the central Russia. It borders Ukraine and Rostov Oblast in the South, Belgorod Oblast in the West, Kursk Oblast in the North-West, Lipetsk and Tambov Oblasts in the North, and Volgograd Oblast in the North-East.
History
1585 – the city of Voronezh is established 1725 – Voronezh Province is established 1928 – Tsentralno-Chernozyomnaya Oblast is established, which united the former Voronezh, Tambov, Kursk and Oryol provinces. Voronezh is the capital town. 1934 – Voronezh Oblast is established
Population
The urban population’s share amounts to 62.5 %. More than 94% of the population are Russians, however, there are territories populated by Ukrainians. A major portion of the population in the south of the Oblast refers to themselves as the Don Cossacs. Despite the unfavorable birth and death rate figures, the total population in Voronezh Oblast stays stable and the male life expectancy is one of the best in Russia.
Climate
The climate is moderate continental with an annual air temperature ranging from +5.0°С in the North to +6.5°С in the South of the region. The precipitation level on the major part of the territory amounts to 450-550 mm. The annual maximum air temperature is +34...+36°С, while the minimum temperatures range between -27 and -31°С. An average frost-free period lasts for 230 days a year.
Economy
Voronezh Oblast is structurally an agrarian and industrial region. The main role in economy is played by machine-building, electricity production, chemical industry and food processing industries. These enjoy a share of 4/5 of the total volume of industrial product produced by the Oblast. Food processing as well as machine-building and metalworking are specialties of the region. The Oblast’s industry specializes in the production of lathes, excavators, metal bridge structures, forge-and-press and ore-dressing equipment, electronics and commercial airplanes.
Resources
The mineral resource base in Voronezh Oblast is represented by reserves of non-metallic feeds, mainly by construction materials (sands, clay, chalkstone, granites, cement raw materials, sienna, limestone, and sandstone). The Oblast also has reserves of phosphorites and huge reserves of chalk stone.

Kulakov, Vladimir Grigoryevich Head of Administration of Voronezh Oblast
Born on April 23, 1944 in Komsomolsk-on-Amur.
1966 – graduated from the Voronezh Politechnics (radio physics). Doctor of Science.
1969 – upon graduation of the Higher School of the KGB in Minsk started his career in the sate security service as an operative.
1983 – Head of the Voronezh KGB Directorate Counterintelligence Department
1987 –Work in the Central Apparatus of the KGB of the USSR.
