| | PERM KRAY
Geographic Position
The Perm Kray is situated in the North-Eastern part of the East-European Plain and on the western slopes of the Middle and North Urals. It borders the Republic of Bashkortostan in the South, the Republic of Udmurtia in the South-West and West, the Komi-Perm Autonomous District in the North-West, Kirov Oblast in the West, Komi Republic in the North, and Sverdlovsk Oblast in the East.
History
1938 – Perm Oblast is detached from Sverdlovsk Oblast 2005 – Perm Oblast and Komi-Perm Autonomous District are merged into the Perm Kray
Population
The major portion of the population is urban. The majority of the population is Russian (89%). In addition to Russians, Tatars,Bashkirs, Ukrainians, Udmurts, Komi and other ethnicities populate the region. The death rate exceeds the birth rate, therefore, the natural growth is negative and is not compensated by the inflow of migrants. The population consistently declines.
Climate
The climate is moderate continental. Winters are snowy and cold while summers are moderately warm. The average air temperature of January ranges from -15С to -18С, while that of July is within the range of +16С to +18С. The annual precipitation level ranges from 450 mm in the South-West to 800 mm in the North-East. Te vegetative season lasts for 145-165 days.
Economy
Heavy industry is the basis of the Perm Kray’s economy. Forestry also plays a significant role. Other key industries include oil production, chemical and petrochemical industries, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, machine-building and lumber industry. Oil and gas enterprises of the Kray are mainly involved in primary processing of crude oil and gas. The industry of the region in general is overloaded with the excessive number of extractive enterprises and enterprises of the military and industrial complex. At the same time, regional natural and climatic conditions are unfavorable for agriculture and providing food self-sufficiency for the population.
Resources
The Perm Kray has various natural resources and powerful industrial capacities. The power resources of the river Kama are combined with reserves of coal (Kizelovskiy basin), oil and gas. The Europe’s largest potassium salts deposits are located in the northern part of the region. The region also has deposits of precious (diamonds) and ornamental (Selenite) stones, gold and platinum, chromium ore, raw materials for metallurgy and cement production, carbon-bearing materials. The region has 205 proven oil and gas fields; there are eight deposits of alluvial diamonds in the northern part of the region. The region’s forest resources are also significant.
Specific Features of the Region
