Geographic Situation

Kamchatskiy Kray is situated in the Southern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula. In the North it borders on Magadan Oblast and the Chukotski Autonomous District.
In the West the kray’s territory is washed by the cold Sea of Okhotsk, and in the East – by the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

History

1932 – Kamchatka Oblast established within the Khabarovsk Territory
1956 – detached into an independent oblast of the RSFSR
2007 (July 1st) - was established in result of merging of Kamchatka Oblast and Koryakskiy Autonomus District

Population

The majority of the population is Russian (86%). Besides them, the territory of Kamchatskiy Kray is populated by Koryaks, Evenks, Aleuts and Chukchis.
Kamchatskiy Kray is a highly urbanized one, with the share of the urban population constituting 79.2%.
Death-rate exceeds birth-rate. The negative natural growth and out-migration lead to an intensive decrease in the total number of the population in Kamchatka.

Climate

The coastal area and the South of the peninsula are characterized by the maritime climate, while in its central and Northern parts the climate is continental. Snow falls at the end of September in the North and at the end of October in the South. Summer is relatively cool in the coastal area and rather hot in the central part. The average temperature in January is -13° C, and the average temperature in July is +12° C. The annual precipitation is 1,000 mm.

Economics

The leading sectors accounting for most of the GRP are industry, construction, trade and public catering, transport and communication, and agriculture.
The basic sector in the industry and the economics at large is the fish industry, which accounts for approximately 60% of the regional industrial output.
The region is the seat of major military bases including those for submarines, as well as air bases and radar stations.

Resources

The minerals include gold, coal, mica and natural gas.

Peculiarities of the Region

The majority of the population lives in the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative center of the oblast.
The peninsula lies in the zone of intensive volcanic activity with approximately 300 large and medium-size volcanoes situated in its territory; 29 of them are active. The highest volcano in Eurasia, Kluchevskaya Sopka, is situated there.
Kamchatskiy Kray accounts for 13.6% of the output of fish foodstuffs, and 17.4% of the fish and seafood catch of the Russian Federation.
