On November 21-24, 2010, the leaders of 13 Tiger Range Countries assembled in St. Petersburg for The International Forum on Tiger Conservation hosted by the Russian Government. This International Forum, well-known as the ‘Tiger Forum’, became the first high-level meeting anywhere to save an endangered species. Head of Governments and other government officials, as well as global international tiger partners, from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, Thailand, and Vietnam endorsed the Global Tiger Recovery Program, and signed the St. Petersburg Declaration reaffirming their resolve to save wild tigers from extinction.
The Global Tiger Initiative was launched by the World Bank and global international partners in 2008. The key difference of this Forum in comparison to past attempts is that the tiger range countries are now in charge of efforts to save the wild tiger while the coalition draws on best practice from science, conservation, nongovernmental organizations, law enforcement, and others.
