| The World Bank, for the first time, awarded small grants to a dozen civil organizations in Slovakia in 2000. The grants, ranging between $1,500 and $4,000, will support HIV/AIDS prevention program among teenagers, hospice care in Banska Bystrica, women victims of violence, programs for the disabled, and small business development in rural areas. Altogether 56 applications were received, and, based on the recommendations of an independent Slovak evaluation committee (representing the Slovak Helsinki Committee, the Slovak Foreign Policy Association, Transparency International, the Foundation InfoRoma and the Open Society Foundation), the World Bank’s Regional Office in Budapest selected the 12 winners., The World Bank’s Small Grants Program was launched in 1983. to provide modest endowments for non-governmental organizations. The small amount can provide significant help when it comes to kick off special programs, organize conferences and seminars, fund the startup costs of a publications, or other networking efforts that small organizations generally find difficult to finance through their regular program budgets. These grants are to serve noble and forward-looking causes, such as poverty reduction, environmental protection, human resource development, and private sector development.
