The new Socio-Economic Atlas of Tajikistan is the result of a year long collaboration between the University of Southampton and the State Statistical Committee of the Republic of Tajikistan.
The atlas arose out of a need to gain a better understanding among Government agencies and civil society about the spatial distribution of poverty across the country. The atlas includes information on a range of different indicators of the well-being of the population, including education, health, economic activity and the environment. A unique feature of the atlas is the inclusion of estimates of material poverty at the Jamoat level.Â
The derivation of these estimates involves combining the detailed information on household expenditures available from the 2003 Tajikistan Living Standards Survey and the national coverage of the 2000 Census using statistical modelling. This is the first time that such complex statistical methodology has been applied in Central Asia and Tajikistan is at the forefront of such innovation.
The development of the poverty atlas is just one of a number of activities that the World Bank is supporting as part of its on-going Program on Poverty Dialogue with the Government of Tajikistan. Other activities include support to Goskomstat in surveys conduction, poverty analysis and public expenditures tracking, technical and financial assistance for the 1999 and 2003 Tajikistan Living Standards Surveys, preparation of the 2000 Poverty Assessment and 2004 Poverty Assessment Update, assistance to local scholars in studying factors associated with poverty, Health and Education Facilities Survey.
