Ashgabat, July 15, 2005 - The World Bank Liaison Office in Turkmenistan awarded six Turkmen non-government organizations grants totaling $29,000 from the Small Grants Program for implementation of projects focusing on the empowerment of marginalized and vulnerable groups. All 33 requests and applications for grants were carefully and thoroughly reviewed, and six best projects meeting the requirements of the Small Grants Program were selected by the Evaluation Committee for funding. The following Turkmen non-government organizations were announced the winners of the World Bank's Small Grants Program: 1. Sport Club “Aikido-Lachin” (Ashgabat, Turkmenistan) The purpose of the project is to support rehabilitation and directly help to children with special needs to improve their psychological adaptation in society; to promote involvement of disabled children and their parents into social life of Turkmenistan; change social attitudes to disabled children; improve interaction between various players (local authorities, business and NGO); continue to shape positive public attitude to disabled children. 2. The Public Organization “Turkmen’s Heritage” (Ashgabat, Turkmenistan) The project supports development of rural capacity by involving the self-employed rural poor located in the center of Karakum desert to establish community groups in order to (i) be trained in having a series of dialogues with the authorities on an equal footing, (ii) facilitate proactive involvement of rural population in the life of the country by facilitating access to information and (iii) conduct a number of training seminars and conferences with participation of public organizations, local authorities, socially active representatives among local population to raise public awareness of importance of access to information of rural population. 3. Public Center of Languages (Turkmenabat, Turkmenistan) The project supports a series of seminars, round tables and trainings to boost social activity of young people in rural areas and Turkmenabat by developing training materials, conducting seminars and providing access to information on business, labor and social leadership. 4. Society Center “Dil”(Murgap etrap, Turkmenistan) The project supports provision of a sustained mechanism for social adaptation of young people living in rural areas; to set up information and consultation center in rural school in order to provide young people with access to necessary information; to train a number of consultants selected among local teachers to ensure the on-going service in the center; to share experience of the project with the representatives of local authorities, businesses and NGOs through periodical newsletters and round tables. 5. National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan (Turkmenabat, Turkmenistan) The purpose of the grant is to support activization of rural youth and youth of Turkmenabat of Lebap velayat through “Open House” information campaign run by a special group of trained volunteers aimed at provision of access to different sources of information; to facilitate local initiatives to assist inclusion of youth in the life of the vealyat through various activities, including joint seminars and workshops with local authorities (Labor registry office, Department of Education, Internal Affairs Department); to create and disseminate to youth a Career Opportunities and Potential Employers Resource Guide in Turkmen and Russian languages; to establish youth relevant cross-sector database for youth under the Youth Centre “Gayrat”. 6. Public Center “Hemayat” (Dashoguz, Turkmenistan) The purpose of the grant is to support development of training materials for conducting seminars on business, labour and civil rights; a series of workshops and training to provide legal education in different areas of a special interest to the socially vulnerable groups of public: unemployed and their relatives in order to boost their social activity; to share experience of the project with the representatives of local authorities, businesses and NGOs in other regions through a series round tables. |
