Ashgabat, July 15, 2003 - The World Bank Liaison Office in Turkmenistan awarded seven Turkmen non-government organizations grants totaling $25,000 from the Small Grants Program for implementation of projects focusing on the empowerment of marginalized and vulnerable groups. All 51 requests and applications for grants were carefully and thoroughly reviewed, and seven best projects meeting the requirements of the Small Grants Program were selected by the Evaluation Committee for funding. The following Turkmen non-government organizations were announced the winners of the World Bank's Small Grants Program: 1. Ecological Fund of Turkmenistan (Ashgabat, Turkmenistan) The project helps the desert residents (especially shepherds) to obtain safe water from different water resources, not suitable for drinking, reduce budget spending on purchase of poor quality water. The project initiates the establishment of the initiative group for dissemination of this good practice among other neighboring settlements using the manual, which will be issued on the request of local community. The output results in dissemination of good practice not only in arid settlements but in the localities (urban and rural) as well which are considered environmental risky. 2. NGO "Kushka" (Serhetabad, Turkmenistan) The project provides access of young people to go in for sports and thus giving up or not be involved in drugs consuming. This is a good tool to attract the recipients' attention to whatever is advised by trainers or recommended in booklets on drug addiction problems and other kinds of dependence. The main tool for the implementation of the project is to move from concept to results through the vulnerable groups engagement. . 3. Women Club "Nargiz" (Seidi, Turkmenistan) The project initiates the unemployed women to obtain new skills in sowing and knitting or become the trainers themselves thus enabling them in income generation . The projects starts to become a good experience for replication among the adjacent civic communities with regard in access to skills for establishment of small businesses through trainings, education and social awareness. 4. NGO "Arkadag"(Ashgabat, Turkmenistan) The project promotes civic engagement in preventive measures for drug addiction by conducting meetings in the families and disseminating information in other families. The project helps to establish sound and trusty relations between the enforcement agencies and families of offenders enabling them to join their efforts. This will enhance the participatory partnerships between NGOs, government and religious units. 5. NGO "Ecological school for farmers" (Ashgabat, Turkmenistan) The output expected is that 250 farmers and leaseholders will get an access to update information (the only available and highly in demand source of information nowadays) about the appearance of new pests and methods of integrated pest control and the skills for joint collaboration of all members of the local community in pest control and decrease of diseases as well as the raise of soil fertility. Given the local traditions the number of people of target groups will significantly increasing by getting verbal information from the multilateral family ties. 6. NGO "Peoples craftsmen" under Central Asia crafts support Association (Ashgabat, Turkmenistan) The main objective of the project is the women empowerment in rural area to the involvement in community groups for promotion of small business skills development by restoration of natural dyestuff and production of environmentally safe goods. 7. NGO "Family, mercy and health" (Abadan, Ahal velayat, Turkmenistan) The project initiates young people to determine themselves in the surrounding environment through attending vocational and leadership trainings, seminars; obtaining skills for establishment of small businesses, and thus promoting income generation. Young people are welcomed to join the NGO's activities as volunteers and this could change their perspectives. |
