WB Small Grants Program in FY07: Results

Ashgabat, July 6, 2007   - The World Bank Liaison Office in Turkmenistan awarded five Turkmen non-government organizations grants totaling $35,000 from the Small Grants Program for implementation of projects focusing on the empowerment of marginalized and vulnerable groups.
All 34 requests and applications for grants were carefully and thoroughly reviewed, and five best projects meeting the requirements of the Small Grants Program were selected by the Evaluation Committee for funding.

 

1) Public Economic Society “Hemayat” (Ashgabat, Turkmenistan)
The purpose of the grant is to conduct trainings for a target group of disabled people on Accounting and Management; to conduct a series of workshops for unemployed people on staring own enterprise, accounting and taxes, marketing, and business planning; to convene a round-table and a fair of ideas for projects which will be attended by the local authorities, e.g. hakimliks, labor office, and representatives of the private sector, entrepreneurs; to build a web-site called “labor registry office for disabled”. The project to be carried out in Lebap province at the request of Society of Deaf and Blind and the Sports Club for disabled of Lebap province.


2) Turkmen Society of the Blind and Deaf (Ashgabat, Turkmenistan)
The purpose of the grant is to support rehabilitation of the most vulnerable group of the population of Turkmenistan (rehabilitation of people with eye disabilities (blinds) occurred at a later age) through elementary rehabilitation courses. The course on elementary rehabilitation includes a training program for blind people to orient them in the ambient space, socio-domestic adaptation as well as a program of training for adults on how to write and read by applying the Brayl system. Disabled people from across the country will be attending the rehabilitation course during two months. After completion of the course the group will be able to orient themselves in the ambient open or closed space, perceive and transfer information by reading or writing on the Brayl system.

3) National Center of Special Olympics of Turkmenistan, Lebap branch (Turkmenabat, Turkmenistan)
The purpose of the grant is to form and develop adequate attitude of civil society towards vulnerable groups of population, by attracting general resources of various sectors of community to form a sustainable psycho-physical condition of the children in the boarding schools; to support children of Turkmenabat boarding schools in gaining basic knowledge on sanitary and hygiene, prevent various diseases, promote healthy life style, prepare for emergency situations and natural disasters, and conduct trainings on life skills – develop skills of adaptive and positive behavior. Volunteers of public organizations, young people from the districts neighboring the boarding schools, sportsmen and school leaders will gain knowledge on life skills.

4) “Bosfor” - Public non-profit branch of Youth Union of Turkmenistan (Ashgabat, Turkmenistan)

The purpose of the grant is to collect and systematize the legislation on health/life safety related issues and make it available to common people, NGO activists and experts of various ministries; to conduct a series of (intra)net based seminars, round-tables, and panel discussions with participation of local experts and decision makers from various ministries. The planned activities will  encourage and educate the public about the law in order to raise the level of knowledge on legal issues among the common people and legal experts of Turkmenistan via establishment and maintenance of database of Turkmen, CIS, and International laws and providing access to it.


5) Public Organization “Keyik Okara” (Ashgabat, Turkmenistan)

The purpose of the grant is to promote the forming of gender equality through gender education in issues related to employment, by developing competitiveness and entrepreneurship skills of youth from vulnerable societies of Ashgabat city and Akhal province; during the project some 150 people from vulnerable part of society will gain knowledge on gender stereotypes in employment, basics of entrepreneurship, business etiquette, legal aspects of entrepreneurship, leadership basics. It is planned that 150 people will develop job search skills; will obtain quality and reliable information about legislation of Turkmenistan on entrepreneurs and licensing of entrepreneurship activities; will develop entrepreneurship skills and be able to prepare a business-plan, learn about advertising.
