World Bank Regional Vice President Shigeo Katsu Visits Turkmenistan to Start ISN Consultations

Ashgabat, 1 February, 2008 – The World Bank Regional Vice President Shigeo Katsu paid an official visit to Turkmenistan to start Consultations on the Interim Strategy Note. Mr. Katsu was accompanied by Ms. Annette Dixon, Country Director for Central Asia, Mr. Gorton de Mond, IFC Regional Representative in Central Asia, Mrs. Mehrnaz Teymourian, Country Program Coordinator for Central Asia, World Bank as well as other representatives from the World Bank Group.

Mr. Katsu met with Deputy Chairmen of the Cabinet of Ministers in charge of various sectors, as well as Mr. Abilov, Chairman of the Central Bank, World Bank Governor from Turkmenistan and Mr. Geldimuradov, Minister of Economy and Finance. The discussions covered possible World Bank assistance to Turkmenistan in various areas in light of the reform process going on in Turkmenistan, as well as current and future collaboration for the successful implementation of Turkmenistan’s efforts in its development agenda. The outcomes of these consultations will be incorporated in the Interim Strategy Note for Turkmenistan to be submitted to the World Bank Board of the Executive Directors in May 2008. 

Mr. Katsu ’s first visit to Turkmenistan provided an excellent opportunity to exchange views at the highest level of the Government’s vision for the country’s economic development and the role that the World Bank Group could play to support the authorities’ effort to improve the living standards of the citizens of Turkmenistan.

During his visit Mr. Katsu and the rest of the delegation also met with representatives of the diplomatic and international community in the country to discuss opportunities for collaboration with World Bank Group.
