Ashgabat, July 7, 2008 - The World Bank Liaison Office in Turkmenistan awarded six Turkmen non-government organizations grants totaling $35,000 from the Small Grants Program for implementation of projects focusing on the empowerment of marginalized and vulnerable groups. Six best projects meeting the requirements of the Small Grants Program were selected by the Evaluation Committee for funding.
1) “Lachin-Ay” Club (Ashgabat, Turkmenistan)
The purpose of the grant is to raise awareness among young people on healthy lifestyle, security and safety by disseminating relevant informational material and running series of interactive seminars to improve social adaptation and integration of the youth into the society.
2) Turkmen Society of the Blind and Deaf (Ashgabat, Turkmenistan)
The goal of the project is support social mobilization and integration of the people with eyesight disabilities (blind people) through the delivery of training program on social adaptation and provision of access to informational resources. The project activities are to raise awareness of the public of the needs of the disabled through series of round tables with the local authorities and private sector to establish a framework for social inclusion of the disabled through public-private partnerships and mobilize different stakeholders to help the disabled to address the challenges they are facing.
3) Lebap Branch of the Public Union for Nature Protection of Turkmenistan (Turkmenabat, Turkmenistan)
The purpose of the grant is to enhance ability of the public to influence decision-making processes related to environmental issues through improved access to updated environmental library of NGO, series of eco-marathons and establishment of youth environmental network. The project will also support production of the related PR materials and support a number of round tables in the regions with the local authorities and state ministries to build the capacity and raise awareness general public and youth to work jointly with the local authorities to address environmental issues.
4) “Syahat” Information Center (Ashgabat, Turkmenistan)
The goal of the project is to raise awareness of the authorities and young people on the human trafficking related issues and facilitate local initiatives to assist inclusion of unemployed youth in the economic life of the country. A number of round-tables and panel discussions will be held with participation of different state agencies and local NGOs in order to initiate, promote a dialogue and open discussion on human trafficking issues. The project will also support delivery of the series of workshops to train the vulnerable youth new skills to enhance their employment opportunities and to improve their knowledge on human trafficking legislation.
5) Health Information Center (Ashgabat, Turkmenistan)
The goal of the project is improve legal literacy, foster empowerment of and enhance skills of women living in urban and rural areas by running a series of workshops and trainings on home violence issues. The join round tables to be held will raise awareness of the public on the home violence issues. The project will support establishment of an office for psychology support for those women who suffered from violence.
6) NGO Agama (Ashgabat, Turkmenistan)
The grant supports a series of field seminars, round tables and trainings to boost social activity of young people by conducting seminars and providing access to information on social leadership and involving youth in the activities of the organization.
