Zaporizhya Environmental Partnership Project implemented by Zaporizhya Municipality and the World Bank launched project web site www.ecohealth.zp.ua to increase public awareness on environmental issues and options to influence how they are addressed.
The data on environmental risks associated with industrial pollution in the city of Zaporizhya made available as a result of implementation of Environmental Risk Assessment Program, funded by US EPA in 2002-2006 provides a solid background for and informed update of the EAP. The use of environmental risk assessment methodology on a pilot basis in Zaporizhya is an important precedent for Ukraine generally. Adoption of this methodology as a legitimate instrument of environmental management will enable Ukraine to better define its environmental priorities and allocate public resources for environment in line with existing international practices.
Recognizing strong commitment of oblast and city authorities to address environmental crisis, the World Bank is providing technical assistance to Zaporizhya oblast to improve environmental situation. The objective of the Project is to initiate and catalyze a series of steps that will lead to reduction of pollution levels, thereby improving human health and the business environment, and share the experiences more broadly in an endeavor to scale up impacts in other regions if not nationally.
