Kyiv, October 7, 2008 – The World Bank has launched a Programmatic Technical Assistance to Ukraine on the Free Trade Agreement with the EU. This was announced during a press conference in the World Bank Kyiv Office today.
Ukraine joined the World Trade Organization on May 16, 2008. This paved the way to immediate launch of negotiations on a deep and comprehensive Free Trade Agreement.
The main objective of this new World Bank multi-sectoral technical assistance is to help the Ukrainian authorities assess the economic benefits and costs of closer integration with and regulatory approximation to the EU and examine the possible sequencing of reform steps in this regard. The technical assistance would also help the authorities derive an action plan of institution and capacity building measures that will be needed to implement the FTA.
“The World Bank Ukraine Team will pull together the knowledge and expertise from various sectors to help Ukraine understand the implications of trade integration and legal approximation across a broad range of topics. – says Martin Raiser, World Bank Director for Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova. - We stand ready to support Ukraine in its EU aspirations”.
“The deep and comprehensive FTA is an important mechanism of Ukraine’s integration into the EU Internal Market. For Ukraine, it will mean better economic governance, improved conditions for business and investors, higher quality products and services for customers. The Government of Ukraine is committed to this goal. Therefore we are grateful for the World Bank’s timely high-quality assistance”, – stated Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Hryhorii Nemyria.
