Adaptation to Climate Change Discussion

Begins:   Oct 20, 2010
Ends:   Oct 20, 2010

On October 20, 2010 the World Bank Office in Ukraine held a “Round Table” Discussion with Ukrainian experts and representatives of the relevant authorities, where issues related to adaptation to climate change were discussed. The event concluded a series of “Round Table” Discussions dedicated to climate change adaptation.  Earlier “Round Table” discussions were held in Kherson (April 22, 2010) and Donetsk (June 1, 2010). Consultations were organized by the World Bank in order to highlight priorities/challenges in the area of adaptation to climate change.

The experts agreed that Ukraine is characterized by considerable regional differences as to the sensitivity of natural, economic and social systems to climate change.. At the same time during the last two decades substantial temperature shifts are taking place in all Ukrainian regions, especially in winter time. There has been an increase in the number of days with severe weather conditions. Also, seasonal distribution of precipitation has changed fundamentally. And all these climate factors have been creating the adverse conditions for agriculture.

In this context the participants of the discussion in Kyiv pointed out that making an analysis of climate change and defining its influence on the different sectors of Ukraine’s regional economy were the key tasks for now. The experts recognized the necessity to support adaptation efforts in designing national and regional sustainable development plans.
