Small Grants Program 2011
The World Bank Office in Ukraine in partnership with the Ukraine National Initiatives to Enhance Reforms (UNITER) announces the Small Grants Program 2011.
The World Bank Small Grants Program (SmGP) for non-governmental organizations is a mechanism complementing the Bank programs on enhancing cooperation and communication between different partners and enabling the World Bank to directly cooperate with civil society organizations.
This year Ukraine SmGP will focus on improving governance through enhancing the role of the civil society in improving service provision and government accountability in particular. Inside this broader area, the SmGP will concentrate on supporting civil society activities, addressing the issues of public accountability in health and communal services. Ukraine has been consistently ranking poorly on the public perceptions of the quality of health and communal services. Services in both sectors are provided at the local level, and supporting the small local-level CSOs, targeted through SmGP, would hopefully bring tangible benefits directly to the communities.
Who can apply? Any civil society organization involved in activities related to public accountability may apply for a grant. The SmGP prefers to support nonprofit, nongovernmental, nonacademic organizations.
What kind of activities are supported? Workshops, seminars, information campaigns, and innovative networking efforts to enhance civic engagement, build capacity, raise awareness, or influence policymaking or public service delivery are all considered acceptable activities for SmGP funding.
What kind of activities are not supported? Small Grants cannot fund: research programs, formal academic training programs, operational projects, equipment, construction of facilities, scholarships, fellowships, study programs, overhead costs, such as rent, maintenance, or general office supplies, full-time salaries, individuals applying on their own behalf, or non-legal entities.
Grant size and project duration It is recommended that grant size does not exceed $5,000. It is also recommended that grantees contribute an amount equal to 50 percent of the award. This may include cash but also in-kind contributions such as staff time and office space.
Grantees should plan to complete all work within one year of the date the grant is awarded
