The Caribbean is an important region for the World Bank. From Haiti to Guyana, from the Dominican Republic to Jamaica and Grenada, the Bank currently has 42 active projects amounting to more than $745 million in the areas of health, education, infrastructure, social protection, and economic growth. We are also expanding our portfolio and our research in newer areas such as youth, crime, backward linkages to tourism, civil society monitoring of economic reform, and catastrophe risk insurance.
I hope that this newsletter, “Caribbean News,” will serve as a new and dynamic avenue of communication and information sharing between the World Bank’s Caribbean Unit and the stakeholders in the 15 countries we serve. In every issue you will find out more about what the Bank is doing in the region. We will also include links to research undertaken by Caribbean groups, the work of our donor partners, relevant experiences from beyond the Caribbean, and a link to vacant jobs in development.
By providing a clearing-house for Caribbean development news, it is my hope that “Caribbean News” will contribute to the regional development dialogue and will strengthen the close collaboration between the World Bank and all its Caribbean partners. I look forward to getting your ideas, and feedback.
