Issue Addressed - African countries have a history of implementing public awareness strategies encouraging behavior change related to unsafe sexual practices that spread HIV/AIDS. The Caribbean faces this challenge and could benefit from a knowledge-sharing forum with counterparts in Africa.Â
HIV/AIDS & Disability in the Latin America and Caribbean Region: A Serious Relationship
Issue Addressed - People with disability have often been and remained excluded from HIV prevention as well as AIDS care efforts because it is presumed that they are not sexually active and at no risk of infection. The truth is that the chance of men and women with disabilities becoming victims of sexual violence are higher compared to non-disabled population. Also, due to medical advances, people living with AIDS have a higher survival rate due to medical advances, however, as a consequence of this, there are an increasing number of disabilities secondary to the disease itself or its pharmacologic treatment.
